About the Gallery Upstairs
The Gallery Upstairs, located on the third floor of the Institute Library, features a challenging roster of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. As an alternative art space housed above the larger historic membership library, the Gallery Upstairs presents visual art connected to words, language, literature, libraries, and collections, in the interest of sparking dialogue and providing a locus for visual culture within the greater New Haven community.

About the Institute Library:
The Institute Library is New Haven’s oldest independent circulating library and one of the last remaining membership libraries in North America. Founded in 1826 with the purpose of “mutual assistance in the attainment of useful knowledge,” the library provides quiet reading areas, a large circulating collection of up-to-date literature, and rich opportunities to engage with members and the surrounding neighborhoods of downtown New Haven.

Is your membership up-to-date?
