The Institute Library has long been a place where ideas become public. Throughout its history, the Library has provided space, resources, and community for scholars, artists, writers, educators, and civic leaders to develop projects that enrich New Haven’s cultural life. Many initiatives first nurtured at the Library have gone on to grow into independent organizations, publications, exhibitions, and ongoing community programs.

Today, the Library continues that tradition by supporting public scholarship—research, creative practice, and collaborative projects that connect knowledge with community. The Social Justice Reader Fellowship is one example: a paid mentorship and research fellowship that enables New Haven high school students to pursue original work related to race, equity, and social justice.

We envision expanding this work by partnering with individuals and organizations developing new research, exhibitions, publications, performances, public conversations, and other community-centered initiatives. The Library offers not only a historic setting, but also a place where ideas can be tested, shared, and brought into public life.
