There are no organized classes\, demos\, or presentations — simply an opportunity to enjoy a casual evening with fellow creatives. We will meet every other Thursday evening\, from 5:00 – 6:30 PM. DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Institute Library for an evening with the brilliant and engaging DEBBY APPLEGATE while she discusses her latest book Madam: The Biography of Polly Adler\, Icon of the Jazz Age.  \nTUESDAY\, MAY 10\, 2022 6:00-8:00 p.m. \nDebby Applegate is a historian whose first book\, The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher\, won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 2007. The book was also a finalist for the Los Angeles Book Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for biography\, and was named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review\, NPR’s Fresh Air\, the Washington Post\, Seattle Times\, Chicago Tribune\, San Francisco Chronicle and American Heritage Magazine. \nWith her second book\, Madam: The Biography of Polly Adler\, Icon of the Jazz Age\, she plunged from ministers to madams\, from the world of virtue to the underbelly of vice. Madam was published in November\, 2021\, to widespread acclaim and was awarded a New York Society Library Book Award for literature that best evoke the spirit of New York City. \nBorn and raised in Oregon\, Debby moved back east to attend Amherst College\, where she met her husband\, the management writer Bruce Tulgan. We will not disappoint. \n\nWhat is The Great Give® and why are we throwing the live in-the-actual event?\nThe Great Give® is a 36 hour online giving event to support local non-profits. It takes place on May 4-5 with various prizes to add incentives and matching funds. \nOur event is a part of The Great Give® May the Fourth Be With You Happy Hour Double Draw: \nTwo organizations will be randomly drawn to receive the May the Fourth Be With You Happy Hour Double Draw Prizes of $1\,500 each. All organizations receiving at least one gift between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on May 4 are eligible. The more gifts an organization receives\, the greater chance it has to be drawn! \nWe would be delighted to win this and with your support we CAN. Non-profits from the Greater New Haven community rely on The Great Give to provide much-needed funding. We will be sending you email about the Great Give\, and hope you will participate in this donation program to help us revitalize in 2022. Last year\, you helped us to keep the lights on and offer book delivery services when we had to close. This year’s funding raising will allow us to pursue new programs for our library fans!
