SUMMARY:The Great Give® Fundraising Cocktail Event
DESCRIPTION:Great Give® Fundraising Cocktail Event featuring our current exhibition  Cover Story II: Return To The Stacks\nAn Exhibition Celebrating Glorious Book Covers From Our Historic Collection\nOpen to All\nMay 4\, 5-7 pm\nInstitute Library\n847 Chapel Street\nNew Haven\nThe evening will feature:\n· A delightful tour of the exhibit with the curator and board members\n· Charming refreshments\n· Cheerful and easy to navigate donation stations to benefit the gallery or the library in general \nAnd\, to round out the evening\, an ingenious party game related to the exhibit!\nConcocted last year for Cover Story I\, this was a smash hit\, with repeat requests to play “the Game” again. We will not disappoint. \n\nWhat is The Great Give® and why are we throwing the live in-the-actual event?\nThe Great Give® is a 36 hour online giving event to support local non-profits. It takes place on May 4-5 with various prizes to add incentives and matching funds. \nOur event is a part of The Great Give® May the Fourth Be With You Happy Hour Double Draw: \nTwo organizations will be randomly drawn to receive the May the Fourth Be With You Happy Hour Double Draw Prizes of $1\,500 each. All organizations receiving at least one gift between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on May 4 are eligible. The more gifts an organization receives\, the greater chance it has to be drawn! \nWe would be delighted to win this and with your support we CAN. Our volunteers will help make donating easier for the on-line giving novice\, and we promise a warm library and gallery welcome. We love a good party. \n\nCan’t attend or just Interesting in donating to The Great Give® for the Gallery Upstairs at the Institute Library now? Click here to begin. \nAnd\, as always: THANK YOU.

SUMMARY:In the Gallery Upstairs :: Cover Story II: Return to the Stacks
DESCRIPTION:Cover Story II: Return to the Stacks \nMarch 29-June 30\, 2022\nWe return with a second iteration of COVER STORY\, this time with input from staff\, volunteers\, and the Board of Directors of the Institute Library adding choices to curator Martha Lewis’ selection. As with the exhibit of 2021\, these books were chosen purely on the basis of their covers\, which are by turns odd\, funny\, beautiful\, menacing\, topical\, and intriguing. Read more. \nJoin us for a closing reception here at 847 Chapel Street …. details to come! \nOrganized By Martha Willette Lewis\n \n\nThe Gallery Upstairs at the Institute Library features a challenging roster of contemporary art exhibitions throughout the year. We offer visual art with strong connections to words\, language\, literature\, libraries\, and collections\, with the active interest of sparking dialogue\, providing a locus and salon for visual culture within our community. \n\nAre you interested in proposing a show? Download our form for more information and instructions on how to submit your ideas. Or\, rent the space! More details on private event rentals\, here.

SUMMARY:Tellabration & Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:MARK YOUR CALENDAR\nTellabration Workshops: Thursdays at 7 P.M. (10/21\, 10/28\, 11/04 and 11/11)\nTellabration: 11/17 & 11/18\nThe Institute Library Story Sharing Group is gearing up for its eighth annual workshop series and Tellabration performance. Experienced tellers and newbies are invited to join. \nWe begin with four workshops. Each participant chooses a story to tell and prepares it for public telling\, with the help of feedback from the other participants. Stories may be of any genre; most of the stories we hear come from the tellers’ own lives\, but if you want to share your version of Jack and the Beanstalk that’s fine. At the end\, those who choose to do so tell their stories at a public performance\, a “Tellabration”\, which is one of many Tellabration sites across Connecticut every November. \nThe story sharing group is informal\, friendly\, and fun. \nSuggested donation is $30 for members and $45 for non-members\nYour donation covers four workshops plus the Tellabration. Click here to sign up. \nThe workshops will be held from 7 PM to 9 PM on four Thursdays\, October 21 and 28\, and November 4 and 11. The Tellabration will be on the evenings of November 17 and 18; for the past several years we have had too many tellers to fit into one evening\, so we are keeping two evenings open this year. \nWe expect that the workshops will be held in person\, observing masking and social distancing\, and limiting participation to those vaccinated against Covid. The Tellabration format is still under consideration. Traditionally we have performed in person; in 2020 we moved on line. We hope to resolve the 2021 plan soon. \nLink to register\nWe are asking workshop participants who can afford it to make a donation to the Institute Library of $30 for members and $45 for non-members. This covers all four workshops plus the Tellabration. If this is a hardship\, join us anyway. We do not want to exclude anyone. \nClick here or use the QR Code to access the registration form. \nFor questions\, contact the story sharing group coordinator\, Arnie Pritchard\, at 203-624-2520\, apritchard01@snet.net.

SUMMARY:Meet the authors of The Legendary Toad’s Place
DESCRIPTION:The Legendary Toad’s Place: Stories from New Haven’s Famed Music Venue \nMeet the authors\, Brian Phelps and Randall Beach In Conversation at The Institute Library\nWednesday\, Oct. 27th\, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. \nAnyone who has lived near New Haven\, Connecticut\, in the past 40-plus years has surely heard of Toad’s Place. With a capacity of 750\, Toad’s has served as the perfect spot for musicians who prefer smaller venues. U2 played one of their first US concerts there\, on their Boy tour. In 1978\, Bruce Springsteen was in New Haven and arrived at Toad’s unannounced\, and got up and played. The surprises kept coming and the club was attracting big names\, as well as up-and-comers. In 1989\, the Rolling Stones played a surprise show on a Saturday night\, giving 700 fans the night of their dreams. Nothing could have been better—the Rolling Stones in downtown New Haven was unimaginable! That is only a taste of the stories that are uncovered in this book. Randall Beach and Toad’s owner Brian Phelps recall the legendary shows and behind-the-scenes stories. \nCopies of The Legendary Toad’s Place will be available for purchase and signing. \nCLICK HERE to register to attend. \nAbout the Authors\nBrian Phelps started working at Toad’s Place alongside the original owner\, Mike Spoerndle\, shortly after Toad’s opened. He had just finished his college career and didn’t have another career in mind… but soon\, Spoerndle made Phelps an offer to become business partners\, and Phelps accepted. In January 1995\, Brian took control of the company and bought the rest of the business in 1998.\nRandall Beach was the rock music critic for the New Haven Register (1978-1984). He later\nwrote about rock music for the New Haven Advocate\, the Hartford Courant and Billboard\nmagazine. He was also a reporter and columnist for the New Haven Register (1997-2020). In\naddition\, he writes the Beachcombing column for Connecticut magazine. He lives in New\nHaven. \nThe Institute Library\n847 Chapel St\nNew Haven CT 06511\n203-562-4045\nwww.institutelibrary.org\nFB/TW/IG \n                            \n
